Today’s outdoor exploration was amazing on so many levels. Two simultaneuous projects have been happening outside: the building of a trench and dramatic play. Every child in the entire school, has been actively involved in both. While I cannot replicate the buzz of the yard, I will try to give you a sampling of what was going on.
The Trench: It started with the tires leftover from the snow. One became a moat and the chidren wanted to lengthen the river. Spearheaded by the elementary boys, they decided to dig a trench from one water line to another. The collaboration of the preschool and elementary children in this endeavour is phenomenal. Two year old Anna fills it with water while Max vigorously digs. Inspired by this, Dovid and Yonatan have started their own trench next to the sand area.Ethan searched for more watering containers.
The Loft (turned stage): As a provocation, I brought out some fabric. Immediately Marley and Bassi wanted to help hang them. Griffin, busy on the trench, noticed from the corner of his eye and came over to shout words of encouragement. Rochel helped finish off the curtains so they would be just right. Shaina, after listening to the discussion turn to shows, backstage and ticket sales, ran in to get the dress up costumes. Immediately, Sheva and Natasha got dressed, while Ruby and Joshua started planning the script. Moshe and Chana reluctantly went back to class, when Ms. Andrea called them in, not wanting to miss out on this rich outside playtime.
This learning experiences allowed the children to grow and learn about so many things- community, creativity, problem solving, imagination, collaboration, critical thinking, the list goes on and on… The voices heard in the yard were full of ideas, encouragement and compliments. I can’t wait to see where this will lead next week!

Natural Wonders
Friday, February 12th, 2010Big Ideas…
Tuesday, January 12th, 2010At Aleph we plan our curriculum based on “big ideas.” One of these ideas was to give the children ownership of the space they occupy for many hours everyday. We thought that the dramatic play area would b be the best place to start this.
I was fortunate enough to formally observe the children as they renovated their dramatic play area. The reason this became a big ideas is because many curricular goals were met while the children were engaged in an activity that was meaningful to them.
Math- The children had to measure the kitchen before finding a home for it. The children used critical thinking and decision making skills to decide where things needed to go. Concepts like big and little, lenght and width were also discussed.
Science- Cause and effect became a natural part of this activity.
Writing- The children used their own writing to create windows. They used symbols to communicate understanding to the wider school community.
Social-emotional- The children helped each other complete the greater task of getting the large kitchen into the room. They negotiated where it should go and who should do what. As an adult, I was awed by how cohesive they were during the process.
Ms. Carey, thank you for being so brave, for trusting our children with and allowing them to make their own decisions and see what works!

Saluting our Stupendous Staff
Friday, September 11th, 2009I just want to take the time to give a special salute to our wonderful staff. This is only the second week of school and both of our lead teachers, Andrea and Carey, have already participated in some professional development. They attended an evening with select Washoe County teachers at the Nevada Museum of Art. Please ask them about it, I’m sure they’d love to share.
Collaboration is a huge component to creating a vibrant community at Aleph. Our elementary students have chosen cooking as their broad research topic. Andrea and Carey have already spoken about ways to involve our preschoolers in this process. If you have any ideas, please share them with us.
Our teachers are always available to chat with you. The learning that goes on at Aleph is multi-layered, with the voices of the children and staff embedded in the learning. Please let your voice be heard as well!
